Hello friends!
I’m Alice Wood, a heritage toymaker, textile artist and illustrator.
Little Toy Dogs are hand-made textile pieces, designed and sewn in my south London studio. My work is inspired by my affection for dogs and combines my enjoyment of hand-sewing and making with the problem-solving nature of pattern cutting. Using traditional toy making processes I create unique and characterful jointed dogs from beautiful mohair fabrics, which have been used to make classic Teddy Bears and toys for over 100 years. These tactile objects are intended to sit on a mantelpiece or bookcase as fun, appealing and playful décor for dog loving homes.
I trained in pattern cutting before studying BA Illustration at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts followed by MA Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. Before starting The Little Toy Dog Company, I worked as a freelance illustrator for many years. My own dear dog is a Shetland Sheepdog called Franki (but I do understand that everybody’s dog is really the best dog).
I am a Crafts Council registered maker, a member of the British Toymakers Guild, and the Heritage Crafts Association.
I write about toy making, drawing, my inspiration, and dogs!
